Where you register your domains matters more than most investors think. The wrong registrar costs you more in fees, makes transfers difficult, and limits your selling options.
I’ve used GoDaddy, Namecheap, Cloudflare, and Porkbun. Here’s what I learned.

GoDaddy: Best for Selling
Pros:
- Afternic integration built-in. Domains listed on Afternic are visible to millions of buyers.
- Easy domain push between GoDaddy accounts.
- Auctions integrated (Afternic, GoDaddy Auctions).
- Most domain buyers search GoDaddy for available names in your niche.
Cons:
- Aggressive upsells. They’ll try to sell you hosting, email, SSL, website builder at every step.
- Renewal prices increase after the first year.
- Interface is cluttered and slow.
Best for: Domains you actively list for sale. The Afternic integration makes it worth the extra fee.
Namecheap: Best for Management
Pros:
- Clean interface. Easy to manage DNS, WHOIS privacy, and transfers.
- Free WHOIS privacy (included with every domain).
- Marketplace for selling (smaller than Afternic).
- Good customer support.
Cons:
- No built-in Afternic integration (you list separately).
- Renewal prices are mid-range.
- Selling marketplace has lower traffic.
Best for: Domains you’re holding long-term. Good management tools at reasonable prices.
Cloudflare: Cheapest, But Tricky
Pros:
- At-cost pricing. You pay exactly what the registry charges (about $10/year for .com).
- Excellent DNS management (fastest DNS in the world).
- No upsells.
Cons:
- You can only use Cloudflare DNS (can’t use another provider while registered there).
- Transfers out are difficult (they make it intentionally hard to leave).
- No built-in selling marketplace.
- No WHOIS privacy on some TLDs.
Best for: Domains you actively develop (use Cloudflare DNS anyway). Not ideal for flipping.
Porkbun: Best Value
Pros:
- Lowest prices (often $9-11 for .com).
- Clean, modern interface.
- Free WHOIS privacy.
- Easy transfers.
Cons:
- Smaller company, less established.
- No built-in selling marketplace.
- DNS management is basic.
Best for: Budget-conscious investors. Good for holding domains long-term at minimal cost.
My Recommendation
- For selling: Register at GoDaddy. The Afternic integration is worth it.
- For holding: Namecheap or Porkbun. Lower fees, clean management.
- For developing: Cloudflare. At-cost pricing + excellent DNS.
I use a split strategy: domains I develop or hold long-term are at Namecheap. Domains I list for sale are at GoDaddy.
