How to Set Up WhatsApp Business API for Your Algerian E-Commerce

The Problem

Every Algerian e-commerce business I know starts the same way: WhatsApp groups and lists. A customer messages, you check your notebook, you reply with prices, they order, you write it down again.

This works until you hit 20+ orders a day. Then messages get lost, customers get ignored for hours, and you’re working until midnight just to keep up.

I wrote about this chaos in WhatsApp Order Chaos. The short-term fix is a shared spreadsheet. But the real solution is connecting WhatsApp to your order system through the Business API.

Why the API Matters

The WhatsApp Business API lets you:

You’re not spamming. You’re automating responses your customers already expect faster.

Three Options for Algerian Businesses

Option 1: WhatsApp Business App (Free, Manual)

The free WhatsApp Business app gives you:

Who it’s for: Businesses doing 5-20 orders/day. No coding needed.

Limits: One phone, one device. No API access. No automation beyond basic replies.

Option 2: WATI or Interakt (Paid, $30-50/month)

Services like WATI and Interakt sit on top of the WhatsApp Business API and give you:

Who it’s for: 20-100 orders/day, 2-5 team members. Needs a credit card for payment.

Algeria note: These require international payment. If you don’t have a card, use Binance P2P to USDT and get a virtual card from RedotPay or similar.

Option 3: Cloud API + Python Script (DIY, $0-10/month)

The WhatsApp Cloud API (hosted by Meta) gives you direct API access. You write a small backend that listens for incoming messages and sends automated replies.

Cost: Free tier (1,000 conversations/month free, then ~$0.005/conversation). For a business doing 500 orders/month, that’s roughly $2-5.

What you need:

  1. A Facebook Business account (free)
  2. A WhatsApp Business Account (WABA) — created through Meta Business Suite
  3. A phone number not already registered with WhatsApp
  4. A simple backend (Python/Node.js) to handle webhooks

Basic Python flow:

import requests

# Send a text message via Cloud API
def send_whatsapp(to_number, message):
    url = f"https://graph.facebook.com/v18.0/{PHONE_NUMBER_ID}/messages"
    headers = {
        "Authorization": f"Bearer {ACCESS_TOKEN}",
        "Content-Type": "application/json"
    }
    data = {
        "messaging_product": "whatsapp",
        "to": to_number,
        "type": "text",
        "text": {"body": message}
    }
    response = requests.post(url, headers=headers, json=data)
    return response.json()

# Example: auto-confirm order
send_whatsapp("+2135XXxxxxxx", "Salam! Your order #123 has been confirmed. We'll send tracking once it ships.")

Who it’s for: Anyone with basic coding skills who wants full control and lowest cost.

My Recommendation

If you’re doing under 20 orders/day, start with the free WhatsApp Business app. Labels and quick replies are enough.

At 20-50 orders/day, build a simple Python script with the Cloud API. Cost is near zero, and you control everything. Connect it to a Google Sheet as your “database” — no server needed.

At 50+ orders/day, invest in WATI or a custom backend with a real database (Supabase, PostgreSQL). At this volume, the time savings justify the cost.

How to Start with Cloud API

  1. Go to business.facebook.com and create a business account
  2. Create a WhatsApp Business Account in Meta Business Suite
  3. Register a phone number (get a second SIM if your personal number is on regular WhatsApp)
  4. Generate an access token from the Meta Developer dashboard
  5. Set up a webhook endpoint on a free service (Render, Fly, or your own VPS)
  6. Test with the “send message” API call above

When Not to Do This

If your orders come through Instagram or Facebook Marketplace instead of WhatsApp, this doesn’t apply. You need the Facebook/Instagram API instead.

If your team is just you and you handle every order personally, the free Business app is better. Don’t over-engineer.

If you can’t get a Facebook Business account approved (Meta sometimes rejects Algerian accounts), use Option 2 (WATI) which handles the Meta approval process for you.

FAQs

Q: Can I use my existing WhatsApp number with the API?

A: No. The API requires a phone number not already registered with WhatsApp. Get a second SIM or use a virtual number.

Q: Is the WhatsApp Cloud API free in Algeria?

A: The API itself has a free tier (1,000 conversations/month). Your internet and SMS costs are separate.

Q: Will customers notice the automation?

A: Not if you do it right. Auto-replies for confirmations and tracking are expected. Personal conversations should still feel personal.

Q: Do I need a server to run the Cloud API?

A: Yes, but a free-tier Render or Fly.io instance is enough for most small businesses. Even a Raspberry Pi at home with a Cloudflare tunnel works.

Q: How long does Meta take to approve the WhatsApp Business Account?

A: 24-72 hours typically. Sometimes longer for Algerian accounts. Start the process before you need it.
